Astram completely outclassed Karel in stats and in support (+4 stat bonus > Panic optional support).
Astram also outspeeds Karel (49 to 45) due to self-buff without using up a skill slot.
Astram should be no lower than Tier 3
Karel should be no higher than Tier 4

Yeah, Sturdy Stance should work. Though Unity benefits in the event that you run into a Menace Edelgard so you can backhand her back with maximum power. If you're building him specifically for Edelgard, you need QR3 to punch through the Wary Fighter effect and hopefully you won't have your Eclipse bomb diminished by her guard bearing.

I did consider rolling for ATK/RES Unity, but I figure I might as well go all in on DEF so he can score pings x0 versus taking a little bit of damage on both sides.

Anyone else just really tired of resplendent outfits as a concept at this point and wish it wasn't restricted to outfits based on FEH OC nations? I wish more of them were like Merric's where it's /technically/ an OC based outfit but you can tell it's based on his original original outfit with the hood? Like this feels like an art refine, or at least a chibi refine. Even with the art, if you'd make the black bodysuit the same color as the rest of the outfit it'd pass for just being his promoted outfit from FE3.

The best budget option is probably to apply no-counter to her with Kempf, Rhajat, Flash+, etc. Then you can just wail away at her with a NFU mage or whatever your team has to deal with tanks. Put windsweep/dazzling on your no-counter applier to keep that unit from dying.
