Simple answer. Because people want to experience new versions of those style of games. You may as well say Blood and Shadow Warrior are just Duke 3D mods while you are at it...yet you don't. Must be because this game seems like it's imitating older games so you brush it off as a worthless imitation. Is that right?
By your argument no one should make old school style FPS games ever again, and you should just stick with old games and play them over and over and over again until you inevitably get bored and start begging for a new old school style FPS game.
And mods typically don't have the high quality of a commercial product. And some mods you know deserve to be commercial products. if Ion Maiden is a mod, it's a DAMN good mod that's right up there with Black Mesa.
